Speaker A:Terry Cook and you are listening to the One Minute Driving Instructor Tips Podcast, the show that helps you become a better ADI in under two minutes.
Speaker A:And this show is sponsored by my drive time.
Speaker A:Today's tip is number 60 and I'm suggesting you ditch the acronyms.
Speaker A:It's one of the traps we can fall into as instructors is teaching a routine, but not the decision behind it.
Speaker A:Take something like MSPSL or MSM or even pom, whatever acronym you want to use.
Speaker A:The routine itself isn't the skill, it's the structure that supports the skill.
Speaker A:The real skill is knowing why you're checking, what you're looking for and what you might do differently because of what you're seeing.
Speaker A:Because if a pupil checks a mirror just because you've told them so, that's not understanding, it's just kind of compliance.
Speaker A:So rather than just saying check your mirrors, try asking, is it safe?
Speaker A:Or what can you see?
Speaker A:Or even how would your plan change if there was someone close behind?
Speaker A:That's where the learning is.
Speaker A:Don't just teach pupils to follow a routine, teach them to make better decisions.
Speaker A:I hope you found this tip useful.
