Speaker A:

Foreign Terry Cook and you are listening to the One Minute Driving Instructor Tips Podcast, the show that helps you become a better adi in under two minutes.

Speaker A:

And today is tip number 55 and I want to talk about listening.

Speaker A:

So during a driving lesson, effective listening is essential.

Speaker A:

True listening means fully understanding and engaging with your pupil rather than just waiting for a chance to speak.

Speaker A:

Now, when your pupil feels like they're being listened to, this builds trust and rapport for you.

Speaker A:

Active listening allows you to fully grasp the pupil's challenges, goals and thought processes leading to deeper and more productive conversations for the pupil.

Speaker A:

Feeling listened to encourages self reflection and helps them come to some of their own solutions.

Speaker A:

Now, to listen more effectively, we need to be fully present.

Speaker A:

We need to remove any distractions where appropriate.

Speaker A:

We need to maintain eye contact and use open body language.

Speaker A:

We can also reflect on what the pupil says using verbal or non verbal affirmations.

Speaker A:

We want to summarize key points and we should definitely avoid interrupting, giving pupils the opportunity to complete their thoughts before we respond.

Speaker A:

By developing these skills, you create a more supportive and non judgmental environment, ultimately helping pupils to achieve their goals.

Speaker A:

So I hope you found this tip useful.
